European Market in Stornoway

France has street markets.  They are a way of life.  Last week Stornoway had a European Street Market.  Somehow it didn’t have quite the same ambience and natural feeling that it would have in France.

  1. Looks like our autumn market, usually in September. Going by how people seem to be dressed ... ;) ...

  2. Looks brilliant to me. The cheese stall has to my favourite. the paella stall comes a close second and I'm not a big fan of paella. It's OK with soy sauce.
I'll amend that the paella stall has my vote.
    Superb pictures, thanks.

  3. Adrian. Was that an early finish to lunch then? A few minutes before your afternoon walk appointment! A walk sounds good. I'm spending my time trying to rescue the Laptop. It would have been easier to re-format and start again. I've most of the data saved bang up to date anyway.

  4. Looks good to me...! And not at all how I remember Stornoway.
Throughout the year Lanark has a few lovely markets like this too. Though I know what you mean - it always feels 'staged' and the people like reluctant bit players...

  5. Looks like a very nice place to shot. Love the cheese selection!

  6. I'm sure you're right about the feel but it's got to make pleasant change form the co-op!

@Adrian, Good to see someone else likes soy sauce on paella. I get strange looks from people when I douse it with soy.

  7. LML. You remember Stornoway? From long ago? It's changed out of all recognition since I first came here. But I suspect that you were, well, young, then. Even over the last 10 years there have been significant changes.

  8. I guess when you live so close to other countries, it's natural to compare them. Whereas here we just go along and enjoy, and I would have enjoyed that market, I'm sure. Love the cheese stall and the thoughtful gent.

  9. I remember Stornoway from long ago GB. Worked for a summer in Caberfeidh and another littler hotel (I forget the name - near the Callanish stones)whilst a student in '87. Travelled about the islands. Seems another lifetime ago.

  10. The hotel near the Callanish Stones was possibly the Doune Braes. I say possibly on the basis that it's the only hotel nearer than Stornoway! I didn't realise that you'd lived here for a while.

  11. Yes, I'm sure that was the name. Small hotel. Forecourt full of sheep (mind you I recall an island full of intransigent sheep); small busy bar and it did a roaring, very early morning trade in peat- cutter alcoholic top-ups...
I recall a grim Minch crossing and a grim grey Stornoway with seals bobbing in the harbour. But astonishing beaches in Harris.
    I wasn't there a huge while. Only 6 weeks...

  12. Six weeks is a long time in paradise (or hell for that matter!).
