I was just on the phone when I saw this Magpie Moth land on the kitchen window. I managed to manoevre phone and camera and get two shots before it flew away. So far as I can recall it's the first Magpie Moth I've photographed. It may well be the first I've ever seen here.

Oooh that's so pretty. I don't think I've ever seen one (at least if I have it was as a child and I have no memory of it)
ReplyDeletelovely!
ReplyDeleteThat's a real beauty!
ReplyDeleteWow! That is a rare and beautiful find.
ReplyDeleteDo you have gooseberries in your garden? (Checking Wiki I see that's the bush the caterpillars like)
ReplyDeleteAh my favourite moth. When I was child there used to be lots and lots of them in the garden. The caterpillars just love the gooseberry bushes. There seems to be less now than when I was younger and I don't think I've seen one for a few years now.
ReplyDeleteI remember one evening (possibly because the tale has been told so often rather than me actually remembering it) when I was really unwell with my astham and my parents were having problems getting me to calm down enough to be able to breathe properly. All of a sudden a magpie moth landed on my bedroom window and I started to watch it wonder around through the glass. Within no time I'd forgotten to panic and had calmed down enough for my breathing to recover. So not only a wonderful looking moth but with medical benefits. Although having said that don't do what my brother did -- play with the caterpillars and then lick your fingers. Man was he sick!
Neat photo. I've never seen a moth like that - one reason I always enjoy reading your posts is that I often get exposed to exotic creatures.
