A Trip To Harris

Today dawned sunny and with the promise of a certain stability that has been lacking recently so we decided to take a trip to Harris.  There is a lovely new(ish) gallery we were aiming for for morning coffee but before that we needed a comfort stop and look round the shops in Tarbert.

We spent the time on the West side of the Island

We had lunch at the Macgillivray Centre in Northton - which was as far as we went down the West side.

And of course CJ spent a lot of time doing what CJ does:

  1. Harris looks like my idea of paradise. The restaurant such an interesting looking building.
question: Is Harris another island? Shameful, I know, but geography is definitely my strong suit. Wait! I can google it! ha Off I go!

  2. so...it's not quite its own island Have I got that right? The photos you took could serve as a travel enticement!

    1. That's correct Norma. Lewis and Harris is one physical island with two names: the Northern part being Lewis and the Southern part Harris.

  3. Love these photos -- the blue skies, the opaline waters, and the pristine white house. Breathtaking. Thank you.... xoxox

    1. It's a pleasure Carol. It was as perfect a day for photography as one is likely to get.

    1. Yes Lisa it's good to be able to do that and do things we both enjoy so much too.

  5. The colours are incredibly beautiful - these pictures look more like watercolours than photos.
Glad you had such a beautiful sunny day!

    1. Thanks Meike. Some of them are out of the camera (which is how I usually post my photos) but some are three shots taken within a second and merged using Photomatix. The light was exceptional though.

  6. Great mementoes of a lovely day - thanks Geeb.

  7. Superb scenery and beautiful pictures........I failed to notice the camera in the first shot of John. Assumed he had partaken of the falling down water.

    1. CJ's not a partaker of alcoholic beverage - he leaves that to me! As you will have surmised I did use Photomatix for some but the light was exceptional too.

  8. I agree with librarian - these photos have a real watercolour look. I'd love to know what the locals made of you and CJ crawling around in the grass.

    1. We hardly saw any locals down on the West Coast of Harris: it was crawling with tourists (escaping from a deserted London no doubt). Come to think of it there are hardly any locals left in Harris. The population is now well under 2000 and most live in Tarbert (which we did visit but being a town we stayed on two feet), Scalpay or Leverburgh.

Thanks Fiona it's a long time since someone said we were eccentric - they usually use words like 'strange' and 'bonkers'.

  9. Beautiful photos of beautiful landscape. Seems like you had a good day out - glad for you! Now I'm looking forward to some close-ups of what John found down there on the ground...

    1. I think it'll take until next year for CJ to sort the 600 or more photos he took. I only took 200 - but then I was driving.

  10. Wow those photos are lovely....are you sure you are not using a magic wand to create them?
I think I have been inspired to get rid of my point and shoot, and get me a "fancy" camera with all the bells and whistles.
That is a cool looking cafe, what is the roof made of?
CJ is having fun, leave him alone....he is as happy as a bug in a rug.

    1. Actually Virginia there are them as would consider (says I using a vernacular) my camera to be anything but 'fancy'. It's a Sony HX100V bridge camera with a zoom equivalent of 810mm. Gone are my days of heavy SLRs and expensive separate lenses. They are impossible to travel with.

I think that the cafe roof is fibreglass over wood.

You are right. CJ was doing what CJ does and loves. So do I. I've been waiting for CJ to get his revenge, though, because he has photos of me doing exactly the same. He is obviously too kind.

  11. I love the third picture. The clouds and the bluish green water and distant hills - excellent shot GB!

  12. Oooh, I want to go there...and Lewis!

By the way, it's 2014 now. Too many random things happening next year. All the more time to look forward to it!

    1. Oh I didn't know that you had put it off yet again Katherine. That's so sad. But 2014 will come soon enough unfortunately. Unfortunately in that that implies that I am wishing life away and I am certainly not doing that. I hope you will visit the Islands. You will love them.

  13. What lovely pictures. If only Scotland's weather was always like this - but then, of course, it wouldn't be the same landscape if the weather was always wonderful. Tut tut, life is full of these annoying little things.

But they really are the most beautiful peaceful pictures and looking at them I get a little flash of what you must get out of living there. Not surprised that your neck of the woods got such good marks in the recent happiness test.

I have seen some of these photos, or some that are very like them, on someone else's blog. Perhaps CJ's but I am not sure, will have to check.

    1. Thank you Jenny. Don't tell me that it's not always been like this when you've visited Scotland. I'm not aware of similar photos on blogs other than CJ's but it doesn't surprise me. This is an area of the Isle of Harris which is a great favourite for tourists and locals and CJ and I were amongst many taking photos that day.

    1. Good to see you Elaine. Coincidentally I have been to Woodstock quite a few times. One of my oldest and closest friends lives in Sarnia. I shall pop over and visit your blog right away.
