Coffee at The Woodlands this morning as is our habit. Crossword as is our habit. Feeling that we were on a real high because we finished the first crossword before we even started our coffees we decided on seeing if we could finish two crosswords before we finished our coffee instead of the habitual target of one. We got this far with no problem and then disaster struck. We were stuck.
Bummer.
23 across is snowballs.
ReplyDelete16 down is fiasco.
Oh dear Meike. I am full of admiration (again). We should both have got fiasco. I would never have got snowballs. I can't ask CJ at the moment. We've had my son, Gaz, his girlfriend and a friend from New Zealand for dinner and CJ's retired for the night. No doubt his comment will arrive in the morning.
DeleteDon't make me blush, Graham! It took me about half a minute to get snowballs, and then fiasco was the obvious answer. Isn't it what usually makes you get the solution when you put it aside for a while, do and think of totally different things and then go back to it with a fresh start, so to speak?
DeleteWhy is it that the witty response comes many hours too late. When CJ and I met for breakfast my first thought was that I didn't stand a snowball's chance in hell of getting the answer.
DeleteI would never have got snowballs either, but maybe fiasco.
ReplyDeleteI see you love the crossword puzzle as well....keeps the brain alive and vibrant.
I wish that I could say that my brain was lively and vibrant, Virginia. More like plodding and pedestrian unfortunately.
DeleteWell done, Meike. Snowballs - Wow! Definitely a Fiasco!
ReplyDeleteMy pleasure, John - I am not really a crosswords person, but years of practise with my grandma and later my husband must have rubbed off :-)
DeleteSo close, and yet...
ReplyDeleteAnd yet..... That's just how we felt Lisa.
DeleteI actually solved it too before I got to Meike's comment... But as she had beaten me to it, I didn't bother to try to comment from my phone (which is where I first read it last night). I doubt I'd be able to do one of these on my own though, from the start, in English. (Easier when some of the letters are already filled in!)
ReplyDeleteWell done Monica. A few days later and knowing the answer it looks so obvious but it certainly wasn't at the time.
