Chaffinch

I think that Spesh has chaffinches occasionally in her garden. Now I can't say for certain that I have never seen one in the garden here in Eagleton but if I have I've not recorded it. So, for the record, here, at just after 0600 yesterday morning, is a photo of a Chaffinch (and a Greenfinch) on the bird table.

Late yesterday evening the Chaffinch re-appeared and I managed another slightly better photo through the window in the late evening sun: not good but better than the morning one.

  1. They are both good enough to make the birds easily recognizable. There are chaffinches and greenfinches here; I see them from my windows, but they are usually far too quick for me. By the time I get my camera, they are gone.

    1. Meike the greenfinches are here in profusion most of the time together with the sparrows. One advantage of a bird table is that it attracts the birds and enables photography. I have various perches around where I try and photograph the birds but chaffinches are also groundfeeders. You will rarely see a greenfinch feeding on the ground.

  2. They are a common bird wherever there are trees which is a pity as they are very attractive. I guess it must be lost.

    1. Adrian given that the nearest woods is about six chaffinch miles away he would be lost....or adventurous.

  3. You were as excited to see the chaffinch as I was to see the pair of goldfinches in my garden.
Considering the lack of trees around here I think it is amazing how many different birds visit. From sparrow hawk to a little wren and everything in between.

    1. Yes Pat I was excited. Fortunately I managed not to knock anything off the table.

  4. Heard a chaffinch singing so close the other day. Usually I can never spot birds even if they are deafening me, it is a knack I don't seem to have. But that one then came and sat right in front of me in full view, singing.

Aren't bird feeders nice inventions, by the way.

    1. Jenny it was the chaffinch's call that alerted me during dinner for the evening photo. It is similar to the call of the greenfinch but different enough to make me look up.

  5. I don't know all the British birds but I love the chaffinch! Isn't he the one that his song sounds like "You naughty little boy, I'm going to beat you"? (Oh dear, showing my age here, that phrase is not pleasing to hear these days, but I think that it is what is what the bird sounds like!)

    1. I think, Kay, you may be thinking of the bird we call Yellowhammer and the song we know it by is "Little bit of bread and no cheeeeeese."

  6. I wonder if the chaffinch and the greenfinch are in a mixed marriage. They might have found each other through tweeting!
Do you need that wire mesh around your bird table to keep seagulls away?

    1. Very punny YP. The mesh is part of the construction because it is less susceptible than other materials to the gales. The other reason I use it is to keep out pigeons.

  7. Pretty little things. :)
