I will bet any one of you (and I am definitely not a gambling man) that not a single Blogger in the world did what I did this afternoon. I hope that I never have to be assessed for my mental stability because I'm pretty sure that even the most broad-minded and experienced psychiatrists would begin to have their doubts if they were to discover my secret. Of course whilst it's a secret at the moment (simply because no one knows what I've done) by the time the first person has read this post it will no longer be one.
I fitted my bed with skis.
Why? It had castors but they just dug into the carpet when I tried to pull it out from between the fixed bed-side cabinets. I put silicone sliders under the castors. They were unsightly and not particularly effective. Then I had the idea of skis. Fitting them was not the quick and simple solution I envisaged but an afternoon later they are on. Are they any better? Well they do spread the load of the bed on the carpet and I could move the bed very easily until I put the drawers back. Therein lies the problem. Each drawer when full is very hard to lift. Four of them added to the weight of the mattress ensures that a lot of effort is needed to move the bed. Hey ho. At least I tried. And it rained most of the day so I couldn't go out and play in the garden. Wotthehellarchiewotthehell.
From your description and the pictures I can't figure out where the drawers are supposed to go. But at least in your present way of life I suppose you had no better use for the skis! :) Sounds like quite a clever idea to me even if it did not work out 100%.
ReplyDeletePS - the word castor was new to me and when I tried to google-image it, much to my amusement I got a page full of beavers...
I didn't know that definition, Monica! castor also refers to castor beans. what fun our language is!
DeleteI had absolutely no idea that 'castor' had so many meanings. To me it has always been a wheel under furniture. It is, of course, also the name of a star (being a Geminian I would know that anyway) and a tree (the Castor Oil tree) from which a foul oil was obtained that children were given when I was young.
DeleteThere are four drawers: two on each side in the frame which supports the mattress. There ate full of sheets, towels, wrapping paper and many other things which I have no other place for.
DeleteAh. Not much room for beavers to hide under the bed then ;) Mine stands on legs and with no drawers (or other things) underneath. My bedside table/shelf however is on (as I have now learnt) castors and can easily be moved.
DeleteBeavers with no drawers....now there's a thought.
DeleteFrances!! I'm laughing out lout here and RJ comes running to see what's so funny. Not easy to explain, and once it's been explained, of course it's not funny anymore...
DeleteGraham, on paper your idea was brilliant! too bad the skis won't work with the drawers intact. you could be like me, I never move my bed unless I have my youngest son to help.
ReplyDeleteNorma I have to move my bed to make it properly because the two bedside tables are fixed to the wall and don't really leave me much room to get the sheet onto the mattress.
DeleteI can see a new sport... Slalom on beds.
ReplyDeleteAny sign of the men in white coats yet?
There have been crazier sports Fiona. There was a song "They're coming to take me away, ha ha". I can't immediately recall who sang it. Sounds like someting The Scaffold would do but I'm pretty sure it wasn't them.
DeleteI can't believe what I've just read.
ReplyDeleteYou are really a McGuyver with that incredible problem solving idea.
I only store light stuff in the drawers in my bed, but then again, my bed is on castors and it rolls quite easily across the tiled floor.
Wishing you luck in taking care of the problem.
Does this mean you won't be going skiing anymore?
Virginia I've never heard of McGuyver. I must look him up. I suddenly had a picture of you trying to get into bed and chasing it around the room as it kept rolling away from you. I've never set foot on a ski in my life .
DeleteThe divide between mild eccentricity and madness is narrowing. What fun....I'm still laughing.
ReplyDeleteThe lack of proper eccentrics, Adrian, is one of the great sadnesses of modern society.
DeleteAt first I thought, "Oh, dear, he's finally gone and flipped" Then, after finishing the post, I thought "The man's a blooming genius"! Now I'm going to look out for something similar.
ReplyDeleteJenny I gor the whole kit and caboodle in a charity shop for £20. I gave them the poles and bag back and just kept the skis. The bindings went into the bin.
DeleteNo carpet anywhere in my flat, so castors would be a good way to move furniture about. But the only ones belong to the computer chair I am sitting on right now.
ReplyDeleteMy bed has no drawers underneath, but I have two colourful shoeboxes there. They hold the stuff I need for cleaning my shoes. And the bedside cabinet is small and light enough for me to easily move it when I want to clean behind it (which happens occasionally).
I only have carpets in the bedrooms Meike although there is a large rug on the wooden living room floor. You live a much less cluttered life than I do. I have far too much 'stuff'.
DeleteI'm reminded of a nun who taught me at school warning, "You shall be judged by the company you keep." Your idea could take off and I will claim reflected glory. Better than the other option. Agree with Adrian...such fun!
ReplyDeleteWell Pauline it was more rational than my idea of putting it on little railway lines.
