Coffee and a crossword on a pavement outside a café in Birkenhead is very enjoyable - so long as one doesn't keep thinking of Emerson Street in Napier on the other side of the world. Mind you Birkenhead this morning was considerably warmer than Napier. It's just that the ambiance wasn't quite the same.
