A Canal Walk

What could be better on a cold, dreich Scottish morning than a coffee? Well Anna likes cappuccino so had the decorative skills of the barista. I am boring and just had an Americano. It was a good reward for our brisk walk along the canal bank from Bishopbriggs to Kirkintilloch.

On the way back and despite the weather I managed some decent autumnal photos:

  1. Beautiful photos. I felt like I was out walking with you.

    1. Thank you, At Home. It was nice popping over and seeing the Waimakariri River again too.

  2. Oh, such a wonderful walk.

Did someone really do that decor on dark coffee?

    1. Susan, it was a pleasant walk on a slightly less than pleasant day but it was good for the body and the 'soul'. The young lady barista really did do that and seemed delighted when I complimented her. Kirkintilloch isn't the sort of place were one can imagine compliments flowing freely.

  3. Beautiful walk. The coffee looks so festive!

    1. Maywyn, I hadn't thought about the coffee looking festive but now that you mention it I see it. Mind you everywhere I've been down in the Glasgow area the Christmas stuff is in the shops.

  4. I like that barista's artistic flair, wow, and that pretty red boat.

    1. Terra, the walk was worth it for those two things alone.

  5. I really like that design on the coffee! I also get Americano when I am in England, but I would be tempted for the one with the design, the one that I can never spell! :-)

    1. Kay, I used to be good at spelling. I'm not sure whether it's the availability of the spillchucker or just old age but I find it more and more difficult as time passes.

    1. Amy, I, too, was very taken by it. It is a 'replica' of The Vital Spark which is a legendary little Scottish 'puffer'.

  7. Just go for a walk and you get lots of good photo opportunities.

    1. Absolutely true, Red. So long as we keep our eyes and imagination open.

  8. What a nice little boat the Wee Spark is. I see it has a chimney, is that for a stove or a steam engine?

    1. Cro, I wondered about that. I'd like to think so - a diesel engine is so much less romantic (and so much less work).

    2. Those are beautiful photos. I especially like the colours and the reflections in the boat picture. It looks very peaceful.

    3. Thank you JayCee. It was a very peaceful morning. When I'm on Lewis it is usually windy so a peaceful walk down near Glasgow was very welcome.

    1. Jules, there's nothing like a walk with a reward of a coffee somewhere.

    1. Serenata, I have absolutely no idea how your comment was deleted. Obviously I pressed a wrong key somewhere along the line. Anyway I've rescued it from my mail in-box,

"What a lovely walk. Canal walking can be so beautiful. Those coffees with the fancy decorations always look so lovely, perhaps it is a good thing I don't like coffee!"

I was very used to seeing decorations on coffees in New Zealand but less so here. As I drink my coffee black I have to enjoy those of other people.

  11. Looks like you had the same kind of weather that we had here yesterday! Very photogenic canal boat... And the same can be said of the coffee! (I don't drink coffee, but I've not yet seen anyone do art like that in a cup of tea...)

    1. There you are, Monica, a whole new experience - drawing pictures on tea. If you found a way you could become famous!

  12. Considering the greyness of the day, you managed to gather some good images. I would nominate that "barista" for The Turner Prize.

    1. YP given some of the Turner Prize nominations the coffee art would be far too 'arty'.

  13. Just lovely! And the photos are pretty great, too. *wink*

  14. Great photos, Graham. I can see myself living very comfortably in that shed there on the banks of the canal.

    1. Lee, in this country you'd need a bit more substance around you on a cold, windy winter morning.

  15. It looks like a pleasant walk with a nice reward at the end. I don't drink cappuccino, so I would have been with you on the americano while O.K. would have had the festive cup.

    1. Meike, like you and your hikes with cakes at the end (not to mention the sauna) rewards are always good.

  16. The coffee reminded me of Clarice Cliff china, the V or W of geese of the flights of cranes that passed over our French home. Today we actually had some honking over our N.W. UK home and a neighbour said they were geese. The Dog loves to watch them as well.

    1. Potty, we don't have cranes passing over here but we have many many skenes of geese. I love seeing them in the autumn sky because a) it's attractive and b) it means they will stop making such a terrible mess of our good grazing land. It's not just what they eat but their mess sours the grass for the sheep.

    1. Thank you Kate. You've taken me to some interesting places for walks but I love the fact that when on a walk with you, you see things - very tiny things - that I usually miss.

  18. What a lovely walk. I'd like to walk along a canal for a change from the forest but I wouldn't like the cold weather. Great shots.

    1. Diane, unless I want to travel for many miles on the Island there is only one woodland for me to walk in. Everywhere else is beach or moorland which isn't fun when the wind is strong and the rain is horizontal. Being down near Glasgow offered some alternatives for a few weeks.

  19. All is well with the world - Graham is as one with his camera! To me that's like hearing moreporks calling in the bush at night - All's well. All's well. And you've sparked a memory of one of our first cups of coffee together.

    1. Pauline, I am so sorry. I have comment moderation enabled for comments after 10 days and if I forget to check and given the infrequency of my posts sometimes comments get overlooked. So yours have not disappeared - just been delayed. I'll try and do better in future! As for the play on words, I think our first cup of coffee was at the marina café in Whangerei.
