The Sun Doth Shine

Who would believe that this was taken one hour before midnight yesterday from my conservatory? Yesterday Stornoway was the sunniest place in the UK with 12.5 hours of sunshine. Having said that it was also very cold with a bitter northerly wind making going outside less than a joy.

My internet hasn't been too bad although the engineer told me that 'when' not 'if' it goes again then that's it until the new cable is laid because I'm occupying the last working line within the cable. Memo to self - ring BT for update.

Once I'd been discharged from hospital it took a few days to get back up to speed but I'm back with all cylinders working now (I hope). So I have managed to read some of your blogs and hopefully I'll be back to commenting properly soon. Frances Garrood one remarked that there were few things as irritating as retired people saying that they were so busy that they had no idea how they ever managed to fit in work as well. Well I've been retired a good few years now and I marvel at people like YP and Cro who manage to blog every day. I think my mind must work too slowly or, perhaps, I just don't have enough of interest to share with the world.

More soon.

  1. I'm relieved to read you're home and feeling better now, Graham. I'll keep my fingers crossed that your internet connection holds out a little longer.
    That photograph is beautiful.

    1. Jules, I was a bit surprised when I went into the conservatory and there was still a vestige of light in the sky. The cold wind says it is early spring and the sun, and clear sky late at night says it's almost summer.

  2. Welcome home, Graham I do hope you’re now fully recovered.

    1. Thank you Frances. So do I! That may sound a strange comment because I feel great. Just like I did the other day when the bout manifested itself. The human body is a strange and wondrous place. (I nearly used an exclamation mark but thought better of it).

  3. Happy Being Home! Last cable sounds awful. Is there no Wifi there?

    1. Maywyn, our internet/wifi comes via a landline. In New Zealand I had an micro-wave connection but I don't think they are used here.

  4. The older I get the less frequently I blog. I'm preparing my vast audience for my eventual demise.

    Welcome home.

    1. Bob, it's being soo cheerful wot keeps you going! Who said that? Almost certainly a Dickens character.

  5. Glad you are better. That is a lot of light just before midnight. Not much time for my blog these days, I have lots I want to say but at the end of day, my mind is too tired to connect thoughts to printed word. Oh well, at least I look good. Ha ha!😊

    1. Thanks, Kay. At midsummer it's quite light through the night when there's no clouds. One of my blogging problems is that I don't have lots to say. However when you do write it's always worth reading.

  6. I hope that you don't run into any more health problems and and that you recuperate rapidly.

  7. Very glad that you are back and blogging again Graham. I visited your blog again yesterday and was hoping for something today! You have a lot of interest to share with us. I wonder if "not blogging every day2 has something to do with the way the days seem to pass rather faster than they used to ! What do you think?

    1. Thank you Jenny. I absolutely agree with you about the speed time passes. I was up early this morning. Popped into town and the Castle Grounds for my walk. Stopped for my coffee and met a friend and eventually, after doing odds and ends and meeting people in the Coop (it's a small town and a huge supermarket with lots of space to talk) I arrived home. After some lunch and household chores I spent the afternoon in the garden. I'm just catching up with the blog before making dinner and going out for an evening bowls match. So much time occupied and so little achieved. Unless you measure achievement by contentment. In which case I have achieved a great deal. Tempus fugit cum erant 'habens fun.

  8. We didn't have your sunshine yesterday, but on the way to bed I noticed how light it still was outside. This year seems to be racing along.

On the "when not if" internet issue, is a replacement cable scheduled?

    1. Jayne, I know that the engineers requested that an oredr be issued. Whether it has been I do not know. I'm hoping that I'll be able to find out.

  9. Good to see you back in Blogland, Graham! I am still holidaying in the mountains with little opportunity (and inclination) to go online, but tonight we have both internet access and time.

    1. Meike, it's good to be back. I rather envy you the mountains. I hope that when you get home we'll hear about it.

    1. Adrian, I can't believe how cold the wind is. It's from the North of course but it's really strong and biting. It's at odds in my head with the beautiful sunny weather.

  11. Whether I am working or not (and I just came out of seven years mostly unemployed) I don't have things to say on the daily.
I'm very pleased you are well again.

    1. Thanks, Kylie. I don't either. I have lots of ideas but when I actually come to do something about them the muse deserts me.

  12. Welcome back. Good to hear all is well. Intermittent internet is probably worse than no internet at all.

    1. YP, you are a born natural writer and it shows. I admire that. I'm not. I was a wordsmith but that's very different. Any bureaucrat, lawyer or the like has to consider every word he or she writes. I may no longer be a wordsmith or a bureaucrat but, however hard I try, to write flowing, interesting stories the habits of a professional lifetime just won't disappear.

  14. Graham, I think that for many of us inspiration (and time) to write/blog comes and goes a bit... I too sometimes feel that I don't have any "news" to write about; whereas at other times, I have lots of thoughts, but still find it hard to put them into writing.

    1. Thanks Rachel. Sometimes I miss a day when I'm travelling or like yesterday when my son and daughter in law and grandson arrived home from Itay when my son works and I went over for a family gathering after a 5 hour bowls match. It was home and bed!

    1. Thanks, Amy. I have tried simple night shots here and complicated ones in New Zealand but I really need to devote more time to it...like so many other things!

  18. Hi Graham, I hope you're well. I stumbled upon your blog while googling Hebridean Pottery 'fear an eich'. I have a piece that I was given by my mum and as I am off to the Outer Hebrides next week I hoped you could tell me a little about its history? The piece I am lucky to have is a small bowl that has a brown and black marble effect. Thank you, Lynsey

    1. Hi Lynsey. Many apologies for not replying more quickly. I'm not on Lewis at the moment and will not be back for a couple of weeks otherwise I would happily have met you for a coffee and given you as much information as you would like. Unfortunately I don't have a readily available précis of the history of the pottery or of the Hebridean Range. If you would like to use the 'Contact Me' box in the side column of this blog to give me your email I will get back to you when I can.

  19. I'm so glad you're feeling well again, Graham.

Light until midnight is something that does not occur here in South East Queensland where I dwell, as you know. How strange it would be for me...it would take a lot of getting used to.

I don't know how anyone is able to blog every day....I'm usually a "once a week blogger".

Take good care of yourself, Graham...I know you do...but good wishes never go astray...and one can never have enough of them. :)

    1. Thank you Lee. Your good wishes are very much appreciated. One can only do so much on one's own!

  20. After reading your post and comments received, here are my own, Graham. First, I am glad you are feeling better having read through some previous posts, first. Second, I too sometimes consider what to post about and how often. Years ago, my husband and I posted almost daily in part because we were living in a small town and it was a form of outreach. Now, we’ve relocated to a larger city in another state and I have become the sole one blogging. I have cut down to about 3x a week because it gives me more time to read posts of others and not to bog down others from reading my own posts. And to be honest, we bloggers don’t always blog about things that might interest another person every day😉

    1. Beatrice, when I was living half here and half in New Zealand (which I did for about 10 years) it was a way of keeping friends in each place in touch with what I was doing. Now I have fewer things about which to blog. I enjoy reading other people's blogs but my life is so full on at the moment that sometimes I don't manage to prioritise as I might wish given that there are many things we have to do and not just want to do.
