Art v Reality?

When my visitors mentioned in the last post were here I, of course, took lots of photos. I have only used a few but it was quite interesting to see several which formed part of a long sequence of Joshua running along a ridge above me at Garry Sands. Straight out of the camera they looked like the first two with dark foregrounds and were, I though, quite 'arty' and I liked them. However with a little tweak, they became visual records of a moment in time and little more.

What thinkest thou?

  1. I like the top one best of all because of the position of Joshua's arms and legs. There's a better sense of physical motion than in the other pictures.

  2. Graham, those are absolutely lovely! And I'm with YP - I think the top one is best of all.

  3. The first photo is particularly lovely. It could very well be of a two-dimensional sculpture on the ridge.

    1. Now that you pointed it out I can see that Pipistrello.

  4. They are all lovely. Photos of rand kids are always beautiful.

  5. I had forgotten this technique. A very alluring result.

    1. PS. Alluring makes me sound like a paedophile but never mind.

    2. Nah. Can't see you as that, Adrian. Thanks for your help so far. Another email will be on its way to you when I've finished commenting.

  7. I also like them all but that first one is my favorite.

  8. I prefer the top two; more drama.

  9. I like them all very much, tweaked and untweaked. Very difficult to choose a favorite.

    1. That's interesting, RWP, the first fence sitter.

  10. They are all interesting for different reasons, but to talk about a wee boy running on a cold day, it's the splash of red ton a jacket against a cold windy sky hat draws it best for me. Number three.

    1. That's even more interesting, Kate. The first to choose the piece of red arm that Adrian actually found distracting in the first (sic) picture.

  11. They are all nice. But I like the ones that bring back a specific time, or scene, or feeling. Arty can be nice too but anyhow that's my view.....

  12. Particularly love the first one.
Of course if you are looking for memorabilia then you need the ones with more light so you can see the subject better. The first version is for the photography competition, the second version is for the family album. great shots !

    1. I wish that I had thought of that analogy, Helsie. Thanks.

  13. I think it's a very good way of capturing a moment in time.

    1. Mrs S. I think overall the silhouettes have the vote.

  15. I love the silhouettes but if it was my kid, I would like seeing recognisable detail
so I guess I'm with the majority

    1. I think, Kylie, that it's what you happen to want from the photo. Of course the reality is that you can have both art and reality from the same photo.

  16. Methinks the first two silhouettes make the best 'art' - leaving more to the imagination of the viewer. But I also love that editing programs nowadays makes it possible for us to tweak photos as we please, depending on the context in which we want to use them!

    1. Yes, Monica, I just wish that I could remember all the things I used to be able to do using Photoshop. I really must go mack and start again sometime.

  17. I love that first one most. It evokes universal experiences of joy and wildness and running into the wind
