I'm Getting a Complex

On Thursday Anna and I went to our favourite Bishopbriggs watering hold for breakfast. Café Torino is usually humming and the previous week we managed to get the last available table when we went in. On Thursday there was no-one in when we arrived. I have to say that quickly changed.

When I stopped for a late lunch on Thursday at The Greyhound Hotel just south of Shap exactly the same thing happened. The lunch was, by the way, excellent and very reasonable too.

On Friday morning when CJ and I went for breakfast at Isabelles (sic) in Heswall it was, unusually, empty although, yet again it changed once we'd settled down to our crossword.

And on Saturday we breakfasted at Brunch in Heswall:

Then we went to the 50's Era Museum in Denbigh. It wasn't the best of weather and the tourist season is drawing to a close and we started with another crossword and coffee at one of their period tables as the only visitors. We spent several very enjoyable hours there reminiscing.

By the time we got into the town centre the wind was beginning to howl and we found an absolutely delightful café - Denbigh Secrets or the Secret Courtyard Café - right opposite the car park. Yes, you guessed it. Lunchtime was well over and we were the only customers although I'm sure they were busy earlier on. They served 4 different very wholesome home-made soups and yummy home made cakes too.

    1. They obviously know I'm coming anyway, Cro, given that I've not always been with my brother!

  2. Take comfort from the fact that they were empty when you arrived. The opposite is often the case when I visit places.

  3. You two seem to have a knack for timing - better to enter an empty place and have full choice of where to sit, than arriving at a place crammed full already with only one table left.

  4. I agree with Meike! It also has the advantages of not having to stand in queue or having to wait too long for service - and being able to take photos! :)

  5. Is your watch right? You sure are trying out the eateries. Good for you. They all look comfy.Better a crossword at the table rather than a mobile phone. (Whoops I'm guilty)

    1. Diane, we are always pretty early for our breakfast/morning coffee. We like our crosswords. So far this visit CJ and I have 100% record of finishing the crossword before we finish our coffee!

    1. It is indeed, Helsie. We're very fortunate in that way.

  7. You found not only good food but some colorful places to eat.

  8. I love the upholstered chairs in the first photo! The colours are really nice.
The greyhound hotel looks cosy, too. Of course, I'm partial to hounds :)

I hope you find many more delightful places to reminisce and drink tea and do crosswords!

  11. My first thought was how well appointed the places were ( poss exception of second to last one). It's good to see small business making a living.

    1. Potty, the 1950s café wasn't really a café but they had 1950s tables at the entrance and you could get coffee and tea. The whole exhibition was wonderful but 'shabbily' 195os.

    1. The beauty of our language, Maywyn. What is the saying? Two nations divided by the same language.

  13. When you enter any eating establishment, social media obviously glows hot in the surrounding area - "Eddie the Eagle Edwards has landed!" "Let's go girls! He's here!" "Time for a sausage sandwich! LOL!" and before you know it the place is packed!

    1. An interesting theory, YP. Would that it were true even in my glory days (whenever they were - indeed if they ever were!).

  14. They will be paying you to come and eat there next!!!! Maybe you should drop a few hints....

  15. There appears to have been a pattern going on! It would seem word got out that you were out and about, and the crowds flocked to see you! :)

  16. LOVE the photos of CJ and the cafes... wish you had let CJ take some of you there too! Bear and I have the same effect on movie theaters.... they can be stone empty when we arrive and sit down, and the very next person who walks in will sit either directly in front of us, or (if they have a horrible cough) directly behind us. This is why we haven't been to a theater in years! 8-)
