Reliance

I have been frustrated this week by a fault on my phone line causing an absence of the telephone. This is not a problem for me because I can use my cellphone but it does mean that anyone trying to contact me cannot do so if they don't have my cellphone number. It also means, of course, that my internet connection is affected. Most of the time for the last 4 or 5 days I've had little or no internet. So I haven't been reading many blogs.

It has made me realise that I am very reliant indeed on my internet connection. I use it for my laptop and phone and iPad which is fairly obvious. Without those I can't communicate with my son (in Italy) or my friends in New Zealand or anywhere else for that matter. However my radio, television and music also rely in one way or another and to a greater or lesser extent on the internet as does my printer and Alexa and Siri (whom I use for reminders and timers amongst other things).

There is no 3G or 4G here either so I can't use my phone for the internet.

BT have been brilliant and have kept me informed and could actually have had an engineer here on Friday (and the fault mended yesterday) but I was out all day on Friday so he came yesterday (Saturday) afternoon. He identified exactly where the problem is (293 metres from my house) but didn't carry the necessary equipment to enable him to dig up the cable. Today is Sunday and tomorrow is Bank Holiday but they are hoping it will be mended tomorrow.

I'll be away on the early morning ferry though.

It's been an interesting week and I'll post about it soon.

  1. When a problem like this occurs it sure does upset our normal daily routine and dependency...I know it does mine. I'm at a loss when the internet is unavailable for whatever reason. I have a mobile/cellphone but never use it...it is purely a back-up if my landline goes down. I'm not a big user of the phone at any time, anyway. I'm not one who is constantly on it.

Hopefully, you will be back on track completely soon...and life goes back to normal...or some semblance of normal. :)

    1. Hi Lee. Thanks for your comment. I'm in Glasgow. My line was repaired this morning but by that time I was well on the way. So I'm now catching up on a friend's wifi.

  2. Wow, GB - you are much more tech than I am! Alexa AND Siri? You've got a regular digital harem going!

    1. There's nothing like a digital harem to keep one on one's tows, Mrs S.

  3. Big Bear and I have finally bitten the bullet, so to speak. We no longer have a land line, just cell phones. But the internet speed here down the slope is amazing! Wahoo!

    1. I'd just have a cellphone too, Mrs Thyme, but my broadband comes in on my phoneline so I have a landline phone too.

  4. Complicated it is. Prayers all will be well this week

  5. We become so dependent on internet stuff that when we lose it our little world is turned upside down.

  6. I recently had a whole morning of intermittent wi-fi. I have no idea what caused it, but it was very annoying. I considered giving up my daily page, simply because I suddenly realised how dependant I had become.

    1. I'm absolutely dependent, Cro, and just accept it. However I discovered that I can survive!

  7. A lot of what makes up my daily life (both work and free time) depends on reliable internet connection, too, but my TV, music and books are still old-fashioned and independent of the internet and of each other.
I am looking forward to hearing about your interesting week and hope the problem with your connection will be sorted out tomorrow!

  9. I bet it was an interesting week with your two housegirls. Which one do you prefer - Alexa or Siri? Funny that you never mentioned this triangular relationship before. You are a dark horse Graham.

  10. How very annoying! I've missed you online but assumed you were busy with Real Life people (not meaning Alexa and Siri)... I get super frustrated too whenever my internet gets in a funny mood and disrupts my routines.

    1. Well, Monica, Real Life has had an effect on things but the lack of internet was the principal problem.

  11. An interesting week sounds ominous....I hope you’re alright, Graham? Sympathies about the internet. We all really need it now, don’t we.

    1. The week has become even more 'interesting' Frances and I'm stuck down in Callander. I go into hospital on Sunday for my operation on Monday. That came as a complete surprise.

  12. It's amazing how far communication has come over the years. I remember growing up we had one telephone on the wall in our hallway. Now we have cellphones, a telephone in different parts of the house and the internet. Sometimes I wonder if we rely too much on technology. Hope you get yours sorted.

    1. That’s exactly the situation Amy and I think we have got so used to all the technology we are scuppered when it fails.

  13. Oh, dear, an operation wasn’t on the cards me thinks. Hope everything has gone well. Get up and out a there as soon as possible.
