Safari Day 3: Morning

It's been a very busy time recently. The weather has been better than any we've had on Lewis since April and I've been doing some outside maintenance and also been doing some labouring for our son, Gaz, who is having a house built on the Island. So my visits to Blogland (and Facebook) have been fewer than I would usually make.

On Day 3 of our Safari before we went off to the West Side I took Pauline for coffee at my favourite watering hole in Stornoway: the Woodlands Centre. It stands on the edge of Stornoway harbour which was unusually swathed in mist that morning.

  1. Beautiful misty pics GB. Which quirky seat is your favourite to sit at when having your coffee? I love the red exterior of the building.

    1. Carol I usually sit at one of the tables on a plain ordinary seat. If I happen to be on my own and its full I choose the one nearest to the camera if it's free because it's the most comfy (my brother and I tested them all when he was up). I rarely sit outside though. I usually go mid morning before the air has warmed up sufficiently for me (bearing in mind 16ÂșC is regarded as warm here and I like it in the high 20s).

  2. Now that's a cool place to go for coffee.
They can do amazing things with wood.

  3. Lovely to see the Woodlands Centre again. Can almost taste the coffee. I got a nice shot of the boats in the mist, too. I will be posting about your piece of paradise next week. I like your shot of the town in the mist, too.

  4. I joined a sailing club when I was much younger, but could never get the hang of it. Seeing that single master in the penultimate picture (the nearer one) now makes me wish I'd tried a little harder.

    1. Cro I did some sailing in New Zealand but discovered that I just couldn't handle it with a gammy knee.

  6. Oh the pictures of the boats inspired me - they are so typical of my grandfathers paintings - he would have love them. I have put together a pinterest to collect up some of them to look at - https://www.pinterest.com/frichardson/my-grandfathers-art-leslie-kent/page

    1. Fi I couldn't open the Pinterest link (it said it didn't exist) but I looked him up. His work is lovely and it seemed very familiar. Have you blogged about it?

  7. How clever are those chairs and tables carved from wood! Lovely misty shots Graham. Pauline was blessed to have you as her tour guide.

    1. Liz they are clever and some of them are even comfortable! It's easy to be a guide when one has such beauty to show people.

  8. Like Liz, I love the quirky chairs. Very clever to use the natural shape like that.

    1. Frances the woodsmen who make them are very talented. I have one of their 'natural' coffee tables.

  9. Those are certainly some unusual chairs - I like the look of them, but less sure if I'd find them comfortable... ;-)
Love the boats in the mist. (With boats too, I prefer to look at them from land rather than be on board!)

    1. Monica some of the chairs are very comfy but some rather less so. But then one isn't usually on them for too long.

  10. The misty pictures are great! Much as I love sunshine and warmth, there is something about mist and fog that I find irresistible, it gives such a mysterious atmosphere to even the most familiar places. I remember walking to school when I was 7 or 8 years old on misty autumn mornings with my heart beating much faster than usual because I expected surprises around every corner.

  11. The Woodlands Centre looks like a great place to have coffee and sit and relax for a while.
Love those rustic looking wooden chairs and tables....what talent.

    1. Virginia The Woodlands is homely and friendly and they make good coffee, meals and bacon rolls! The people who make the chairs etc have a real feel for wood.

  12. Those bar stools are amazing! Oh, I just thought, the term "bar stool" could be a mild insult, just as some people say "sugar" in place of "s--t"! What do I think of Cameron and Osborne? A pair of bar stools!

  13. What a great looking place! And mist always creates such an amazing atmosphere, although I don't like too much of it. The trees look incredibly green. I notice you posted a few days ago and I wonder if they have changed since. I was noticing how much like summer it looked and suddenly there are yellow leaves everywhere. I suppose they're like grey hairs. You don't really notice them until suddenly - pow! :)

    1. When I left the Island yesterday, Jenny, the trees were starting to turn and some were losing their leaves too. This photo was taken in late August when Pauline visited. It's taking me a while to get our safari posted.

  14. Sorry...I'm running late, Graham...I'm lagging behind badly! But I've now caught up....puff!!!

What a fascinating place...I might just have to rest here a while I enjoy its unique ambience. :)
