The Leaving of Lewis

The MV Isle of Lewis is the Island's lifeline with the mainland of Scotland and, consequently, the rest of the world. Sounds dramatic doesn't it? It is. The ferry is something we take so for granted but, believe me, if it doesn't run the disruption to our life is very considerable. So on Wednesday I boarded her for my latest skirmish into the wilds of the mainland.

Stornoway Ferry Terminal

The Ferry Terminal at Stornoway is a very interesting building. I shall write a posting on it at some time in the future. That is something I have a feeling I shall be saying frequently during the next six months. However when I was getting my tickets on wednesday morning I was struck by the illustrations which now adorn the inside of the central glass turret of the building. They are new since I left the Island last October.

An Advantage of Age

One of the advantages of being a senior citizen ie over 60, in Scotland is that one has free bus travel anywhere in the Country. True I've only been on a bus in Scotland once in the last many years - from Glasgow Airport into the City - but the thing is that I can. In addition those of us who are Island dwellers get vouchers for four free journeys to the Mainland each year. These can be exchanged for a six-journey ticket on any one Calmac route.
