Thankful Thursday

I think that my friends would say that, on the whole, I'm a positive person. That does not mean that I don't often see problems where others might charge ahead blindly. Where I do see a problem I always try and see the solution too. My glass is always half full and never half empty. Whether we are born like that or we learn it from our parents and upbringing I know not.

One thing I do know is that whilst being positive doesn't necessarily keep you alive, being negative certainly can have a very adverse affect on you and even, in extremis, kill you or fail to keep you alive.

When I was 16 I had a life threatening disease: bronchiectasis. I was operated on and the lower part of my right lung was removed. At the time it was a pretty major operation. However it never occurred to me that I would die. On the same day another person had the same operation. He was in his 50s but nevertheless I knew (because I worked on the medical ward that he had been on) that his recovery chances were as good as mine.

When we were both over the worst of the recovery period I asked how he was and was told that he had given up. With all my tubes and drips I was wheeled to his bed and spent a long time trying to persuade him that, as I wasn't going to die, there was no reason for him to die either. However there was no persuading him and he died. As you will have gathered, I didn't.

That was 55 years ago but I remember it as if it were yesterday. I have never ever forgotten our talks and our completely different approach to our shared situation.

Jaz's situation (it was Jaz who started Thankful Thursday with, I think, this post) and her will to live through a very bad brain tumour has always been an inspiration to me and started me on Thankful Thursday posts.

So today I am thankful for positivity.

Be Happy

I don't think that I've ever shared a public video before on this blog. Jaz shared this on Facebook and it made me realise not just the power of laughter but the beauty it brings. Look at the change in the faces of those who smile. Jaz has always been an inspiration to me. Which reminds me that I really should start some more Thankful Thursday posts. By the way you will need a little patience: it takes a short while before the text below turns into the video.

Thankful Thursday

Last night I read Jaz's Thankful Thursday post.  Written in New Zealand it appeared before I went to bed on Wednesday.  I thought that Jaz's words were perfect and I am - absolutely unashamedly - not just going to re-direct you to her post here (where you will see her the photo she used as well) but I am going to repeat her words which I could not hope to better:

Today I am thankful for all expressions of love and care.

Family that pull together and friends that become family.
Being thankful is about taking stock.
I look around me and feel a whole lot of kindness.
As I have said to my children for ever it's what you do and say that REALLY counts. If it aint kind, then don't!

Thankful Thursday everyone!

Thankful Thursday

It's now several years since I started doing my Thankful Thursday posts.  They are a constant reminder to me of the need to remember just what a lucky and privileged existence I have.  Many of you whose Blogland I have been part of for a while will know where the inspiration came from.  Some of you will not know.

It came from an inspirational lady from New Zealand - Jaz, of Treacy Travels.  Jaz has a brain tumour and life has not been without its ups and downs for her, her husband Mark and their three lovely girls and all their friends and relations too.  Jaz is a teacher.  At the moment she's not actually teaching at a school but, as she said in her Thankful Thursday post today "You might be able to take the teacher out of the classroom but never vice versa."

I couldn't help but 'borrow' one of her photos from that post.  If you pop over to her post the picture will enlarge and the words will be easier to read.

So today I'm thankful that Jaz is still blogging and I'm thankful for such inspiration.

Thank you Jaz.
