I Wish

I don't wish for many things for myself because I'm fortunate enough not to need to wish for things.  However I was at an afternoon garden-party at a friend's on Tuesday and happened to be talking to a delightful lady who mentioned that she could whistle.  Please don't ask me how the topic came up.  As you will know from a recent post it's not something I can do so I certainly did not raise the subject.  However few people I've heard can whistle quite so loudly that it actually hurt my ears when I stood in front of them.  Louise, however, can.  Boy, was I impressed! The whistler was not maintaining that she could do much better.  Perhaps.  But I wasn't going to be the one standing in front and that close again without earplugs.

  1. Hubby is one of THOSE whistlers, too. If I have a.n.y. warning at all, I'm outta there!

    1. I don't know of anyone in my family who can (or could) do that. Perhaps I can blame my lack of ability on my genes.

  3. Yes, I never managed to learn how to do that ear splitting whistle when I was a kid. I don't think I have the patience to practice for a week now. Like I don't think I will ever learn to do that popping noise some people can do by flicking their cheeks. Sigh.

  4. The sound made me remember that once upon a time I had a whistle of the kind used by referees. (This lady would not need one.) I can't for the life of me remember WHY I had one (or what became of it). I certainly never acted referee in any kind of sports.

    1. Now you've made me wonder. I had a referee's whistle at one time too. I wonder if I still have it somewhere. The pea has probably disintegrated anyway. I also still have an assortment of Liverpool City Police whistles -0 they don't have a pea in them!

  5. I prefer to whistle a tune than to whistle like that. My brothers all whistle like that... they taught me once but my father was very strict & very "English" and "whistling like that was not something ladies do". I don't think your missing out on anything. My husband can't whistle like that either :)

    1. I'd love to be able to whistle a tune Liz. My Mum always said that their housekeeper when she was a child always forbade her from whistling in the house because it was unladylike and unlucky. You are the first person I've heard who has reiterated that though. If I say it in jest I'm accused of being sexist - which I most definitely am not.
