I knew that this was going to be a strange day when I realised that I had taken a bite out of my Marmite toast before my peanut butter toast at breakfast. Now it's not that I have OCD but when I have toast for breakfast I have one piece with Marmite and one with peanut butter. I cut them both in half. I start with peanut butter, then have Marmite, then peanut butter and end up with Marmite. I never vary. It's not that I'm a creature of habit either but I've been doing this for over 50 years except for a few years when I decided that I would have peanut butter and Marmite together ie one on top of the other, on the same piece of toast. But that was more than 30 years ago. So this morning when I accidentally bit into the Marmite toast first I wondered whether this was a portent of things to come today. I've come to the conclusion though that as I'm not superstitious, touch wood, the day is unlikely to be affected.
The family decided that I'd taken the whole incident remarkably calmly though so I've decided that today I'm thankful for the fact that I've never had to go without breakfast and have the support of a loving family.
From that picture it looks as if you have toast with your marmite! I like marmite but the thickness of that spread is a step too far! It must take the roof of your mouth off! Have a happy day x
ReplyDeleteMy excuse Spesh is that I have a very poor ability to taste (resulting from influenza years ago) but Gaz also likes his thick and he has a very good sense of taste. So it could be inherited.
DeleteWow, I have not had Marmite in years, now I feel inclined to have some.
ReplyDeleteYou are going to have a great day... a little change is good sometimes. Being thankful for what you have in your life is what really counts.
So Barbados is not a Marmite-free zone? The day's been good so far (nearly 8pm) so it mightn't have been a bad portent but I'm not counting chickens (apart from anything else I don't have any to count). Do you keep chickens?
DeleteNo Marmite-free zone here...remember we were once a British colony so lots of British products still fill our shelves, because we have grown up using them..actually drinking some Ribena now. Yes, the supermarkets have been invaded with US products, but we love our well-made British products.
DeleteI live in the "burbs" so no chickens, although I won't be very good at that, since I am basically vegetarian.
As a child my mum kept chickens and I named them all. One afternoon after school, dinner was a lovely looking chicken stew, and Marcella was missing from the coop, I just could not eat that evening.
Never had marmite. I'd probably able to find it in Germany, but it does not appeal that much to me. As for peanut butter... I eat that out of the jar with a spoon, preferably the crunchy one.
ReplyDeleteYour sentence about wondering whether this was a portent of things to come today sounds like a rather intriguing beginning for a book! If I were an author, I'd ask if I can borrow the idea for a story.
Oh Meike you don't really eat it without toast to give it some texture. Mind you if you eat the crunchy sort then you may have solved that problem. At least you are not american and eat it with jelly.
DeleteAs they are equally disgusting, the significance is completely lost on me. Both constitute the waste of a good bit of toast.
ReplyDeleteMarcel they are not disgusting at all. Just because you eat healthy tomatoes and basil and the like for breakfast.......
DeleteGIGGLING LOUDLY!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteLove this GB. You are an inspiration with your blogging!!!!
Aww shucks Jaz. Thanks. I, on the other hand, think that it is you who are the inspiration.
DeleteMmmmm......Marmite!! You know I'm still spreading the word (pardon the pun) about the delicious combination of peanut butter and Marmite mixed together. Has to be PB first then Marmite mind you or it doesn't work. I will actually spoon Marmite out of the jar and eat it too, much to everyones disgust.
ReplyDeleteYou are your Dad's son and I'm proud of you! And yes, PB and then Marmite. Do it the other want around and get some Marmite in the peanut butter jar and people get really stroppy. I will drink Marmite in hot water. Excellent on a cold day.
DeleteThe marmite looks like chocolate spread to me. Perhaps I should not have even mentioned that - imagine having peanut butter and chocolate spread for breakfast ... surely too terrible to contemplate! :)
ReplyDeleteLovely post, it made me laugh.
Thanks Jenny. Peanut butter and jelly as eaten in the US is even more revolting to me than your suggestion.
DeleteJenny, I've done that before... and I've also sat down with a jar each of chocolate spread and peanut butter and a spoon, and eating both of them directly out of the jar together. Heaven!!!
DeleteI thought for half a minute that the thought of you eating Marmite might tip some Kiwi who is suffering from the Marmite shortage over the edge. (I'm still happy with my Vegemite.) Then I saw the photo and remembered yours is quite different to ours. And your peanut butter looks different, too. Doesn't matter I guess, as long as you enjoy them (in whatever order).
ReplyDeleteYes our Marmite is quite different (sold as My Mate in New Zealand) and stronger and less cloying. The peanut butter is the same though - even the Sun Pat packaging is the same.
DeleteWell, I'm glad that we both have the ability to laugh at ourselves. Keith says that "toast is simply a means of conveying marmalade to the mouth", or, in your case, marmite and beurre de peanute.
ReplyDeleteIf I didn't laugh at myself Katherine I'd be in a parlous state and very much at odds with everyone else who obviously find me an object of amusement. Sigh.
DeleteYou are messing with the images in my head, I thought you British people always cut your toast in triangles!
ReplyDeleteI can see the advantage of having peanut butter first, before the Marmite... as peanut butter tends to get stuck on the roof of the mouth, that should somewhat reduce the taste of the Marmite! ;) Btw I think I still have some left of that little jar you sent me, I tend to forget about it between the times you mention Marmite on your blog (which is the only place I ever read about it, I think). I still haven't seen it in any shop here so just as well probably that I didn't get immediately addicted to a daily intake! I can't imagine eating the thick spread you do. My experiments led me to prefer a thin spread of Marmite on one half, and peanut butter on the other, and pressing both together before eating!
When I'm in NZ and making sandwiches for my lunch box at croquet I cut them into triangles because they are easier to get out of the box that way. Never forget Marmite Monica. It's the food go the gods.
DeleteOh I'm sure you won't let me forget it. Of course after commenting on this post yesterday I discovered it was the perfect time for a between-breakfast-and-lunch cup of tea, and what better to go with it than a couple of slices of toast with peanutbutter and Marmite between them...
DeleteI have to say while I do my Marmite on one slice and my pb on the other, I do put them together and then cut triangles.
ReplyDeleteA fellow officianado. Wonderful.
