Harris Hawk and Peregrine Falcon

Last year CJ and I visited the Chester Cathedral Falconry. We thoroughly enjoyed it and got some good photos and, of course blogged about it. CJ blogged about it here and here.

We visited it again this year and I think I managed to improve on my photos:

    1. Indeed it is Red. I've seen one dive in the wild into a bunch of birds. The speed is absolutely incredible.

  2. We have a visiting Hen Harrier. I'd love to photograph it, but I'd need a very good camera to reach your standards. Great work; lovely birds.

    1. Thanks Cro. I don't think I've ever photographed a Hen Harrier.

    1. Hi Potty. Thanks. The camera is a fairly run of the mill Pentax K3 DSLR and the lens was a Pentax 200mm.

  6. I would be tempted to crop the third picture so that we just see the hawk coming in to land. It seems so sharp and you caught that moment perfectly. Isn't the peregrine falcon such a beautiful bird? The wonder of evolution.

    1. Thanks YP. That's a good suggestion. I shall crop it for future use. Yes the wonder of evolution indeed. I said in an earlier comment that I once saw one dive in the wild. I believe they reach 120mph. That would make me dizzy.

  10. Wonderful photos of magnificent birds... Even with gloves on I wouldn't dare handle them! :)

    1. Actually although I've not handled them in Chester because I've been too busy photographing them I have held one before and they are remarkably light for their size and not at all scary.

  11. Your photos are exceptional!
I have gained great respect for peregrines and am part of a 'falconwatch' team that watches out for urban fledglings as they learn to fly among the towers in our downtown. But mostly I see them through binoculars (or the webcam)

    1. Violet Sky that is wonderful for you. We do have some peregrines on the other side of the Island to where I live but I've not seen them for a long time.
