Books From Blogs

In the comments on my last post Cro wondered if I had considered printing my blog. As it happens I had but, today, I decided to explore the matter further whilst it was in my mind. I discovered that I had tried several times before to do that very thing.

Blurb (which I have used for photobooks for people) turned out to have a major problem because the editing would have taken me a lifetime and there is a limit on the number of pages one can download with no apparent way of using dates to limit the number.

Blog2book seemed to tick all the boxes but I kept getting the message that there was a problem, that their engineers would look at it and then it all crashed - repeatedly.

I ended up doing a trial run for the first three months of my NZ blog (of which there are about 60 months of posts) with Blook. The advantage is that it's very easy. The disadvantage is that there is no editing and every post starts on a new page. The first three months cost £63 (but one gets a free eBook version).

I will report upon the results in due course.

  1. When I looked into it , it was a very expensive exercise. I'll be interested in how you go.

    1. I think it could be very expensive Helsie. I would like to see what the Blog2Book service provides if I can get it to work.

  2. I'm interested, too, to learn how you go, Graham.

  3. That's a great idea - I hope it works out! I started blogging in January, 09 and discovered yours in the middle of that year (I think). Have no idea how I stumbled across it but I'm so glad I did as it has lead to a wonderful friendship that I treasure.

    1. Well without our friendship Pauline I would never have seen all the nooks and crannies of Northland nor had some of our more 'interesting' adventures (remember when Dora The Explorer came to a sudden halt!) and I probably still would not have seen Fort George on my own doorstep (shame on me).

  4. Good luck on this venture. I'm sure many will be watching as I'd guess many bloggers have book in the back of their head.

  5. I look forward to seeing how you get on. On the principal that you will pay £63 for just 3 months worth of blogging, it sounds as if it could prove more expensive than I'd been lead to believe.

    1. I'm hoping, Cro, that there are savings to be made using other platforms but the trade-off would be the amount of work involved. The Blook only took an hour or so and most of that was finding my way around. The whole exercise so far, though, took me all of yesterday afternoon.

    2. I'm sorry now for mentioning it!

    3. Cro I've now had an email to say that the printed book is on its way - from France. I'm not sorry that you mentioned it. It spurred me into action after years of inaction.

  6. Maybe I should offer my editing services as a sideline of our business - it sounds like one can make quite a bit of money with this! O.K. works at a printer's, so we could team up... :-)

    1. Meike I suspect that the editing for Blurb would involve a prohibitive amount of time. I shall keep on experimenting though.

  7. I love Blurb, but it took me about five years to make two albums! (one for our wedding and the other our honeymoon). Did Gareth have an official wedding photographer? If so, then are the photos online somewhere? I'm sure I haven't seen them. Thanks.

    1. Yes he did Helen. She seemed to dominate the whole event. Having said that I don't have any of the photos. Well I do have a few from the sample website. I'm not sure what's happened about an album or if there is one. There was also a video. I must remember to as Gareth when he gets home.

    2. Thanks GB - would be interested to know if they're online somewhere. Photographers from most of the weddings I've been to in the last few years have linked to the wedding photos from their websites, putting the majority of images in a password-protected folder, with a few images available to the general public (so that they can showcase their work).

    3. They were on line for a while Helen but then the disappeared. I'll ask Gaz what the situation is.

  8. Good luck with this, Graham. It would be a lovely thing to have and keep, and for friends and family.

    1. Thanks Frances. It would if I can settle on a do-able and affordable solution.
