Just Occasionally

We have weather in the Outer Hebrides which makes you realise that there is nowhere else on earth that you ant to be (at that moment!). Last Monday was such a day as I walked by the Stornoway Golf Course. It was windless, cloudless and very cold.

There was a time many years ago when I used to walk this course regularly trying to hit a golf ball around 18 fairways an into 18 holes with as few swings of a club as possible.

PS I'm away from the Island at the moment and have not had much time to read blogs. Apologies.

  2. I can almost hear the frosty grass crunch under my feet, see my breath forming clouds in front of me and feel the icy crisp cold on my face. Beautiful!
So many trees - I thought there are hardly any trees on the island?

    1. Meike it was very crunchy under foot. As an Island we don't have many deciduous trees. The Lews Castle Grounds in Stornoway (of which the golf course forms part) are the exception. Sir James Matheson who built the castle also planted thousands of trees in its grounds. Many have survived to this day although a lot have been destroyed in hurricanes over the last 30 years as they have reached maturity but have also often had fairly shallow root systems because of the paucity of topsoil.

    1. Pauline I'm doing lots of visiting (and some shopping) down in Glasgow. There are quite a few deciduous trees in the Castle Grounds and now there are even some afforestation schemes that have survived in other parts of the Island but they are relatively few and far between as you will know from your short time on the Island.

  6. I don't see too many players, you are obviously more intrepid than the course members!

    1. Cro you don't see many players on a Monday morning as a rule but the course was closed anyway because of the frost.

  7. Beautiful blue sky and white frost makes nice shots but I don't think I would like the temperature.

  8. Makes me realise why we upsticked and moved from the south coast of England. It's not hard to get beautiful pictures on Lewis when the sun is shining is it? By the way the Waxwings were back this morning but were gone in a flash.
