Christmas 1/4 of a Year Away But....

Last week before I came away I received in the same post my first Christmas card and my Boots offers for Christmas purchases. I also received an email from Marks and Spencer suggesting I might want to order my Christmas food. I'd already been to the Maybury Garden Centre where Alison had her Christmas display out. I actually bought some stuff.

ARGH!!!!!!!!

  1. aaah the Costco here in Langley, BC had Christmas ornaments and trees at the end of August! I have to confess that today I plan to hang my Christmas lights on the house - it's sunny and mild- otherwise I'll be out in the rain and cold with numb fingers if I do it in December. ps I just recently found your blog and enjoy your posts.

    1. Thank you Sharon. Im I correct in assuming that your 'farm' is what, in New Zealand, we call a 'lifestyle plot' being about 5 acres? I'm not sure I could cope with Christmas starting in August!

  2. As a keen gardener, I recently needed some Garota ( compost accelerator) My local hardware/DIY store normally has at least 3 aisles of gardening stuff. Not so last week, all Christmas stock out and gardening requisites relagated to three little shelves and no Garota ! My comment that composting was a year round activity and Christmas merely lasts a few weeks didn't seem to impress the salesperson.

    1. Cath I use Garota too. If you'd said I'd have brought some down. I'm in Pensby at the moment.

    2. Bless you, how kind, enjoy your time at Pensby with John.

  3. As you know, I'm ready for Christmas early this year. Too early. Will probably spend my time leading up to Santa's arrival thinking about food - and that won't be a Good Thing!

    1. Yes Pauline I thought of you when I did this post. You, however, had a reason! As you know I'm not really a Christmas person.

    2. But if you put on a red outfit and carried a sack, you might look like a Christmas person.

  4. It's all called competition. They're afraid you might buy your stuff someplace else.

    1. True Red. First in the marketplace makes the first sales.

  5. Call me an old curmudgeon, but my Christmas starts around December 20th, and ends after Boxing Day. I enjoy the big food-fest, but the rest I find totally tedious.

  6. Actually it is closer than you think... it's only 1/6 of a year away! They do seem to bring the Christmas wraps and decoration out earlier every year I think at our local supermarket. The wrapping paper is in store ready for purchase just in case someone is ready to wrap their gifts.

    1. You're right Lynda but I actually came away over a week ago and the cards arrived well before I came away. When I said last week I was living in the past! I bought wrapping paper in a charity shop (good will store) yesterday so I've fallen into the trap.

  7. I love Christmas and can't wait for the Christmas market in my home town to start (on the 22nd of November, running until the 22nd of December). The first batch of Christmas presents I have already ordered. I don't like to leave things until the last minute, because I never know beforehand how much work my customers might give me. Therefore, I rather start early so that I can do everything with plenty of time and don't arrive at Christmas Eve with my tongue hanging out and all stressed out.

    1. PS: It is the 24th tomorrow - that's precisely 2 months to go until Christmas Eve. Yippeeee!!

    2. Oh Meike I admire your enthusiasm. I just can't be like that though. I'm just not a Christmas person.

  8. Graham, how COULD you? The C words shouldn't be outed until about December 15th.

    1. Well, Frances, I did say ARGH!!! (I know you're not a fan of !s but I think they were justified on this occasion.)

    2. Hear, hear! Well said Frances.

  9. How kind and thoughtful of Boots and M&S to remind you that Christmas is round the corner. Of course, neither of these noble companies would have been considering Christmas profit graphs when contacting past customers. The very idea of it is unthinkable!

    1. Of course they wouldn't have been YP. How could you even suggest that. On the other hand if my pension fund was reliant on their share prices I'd be cheering them on all the way.

  10. "Bah! Humbug!" :) Have you got started on your cakes yet? (for a Not Really a Christmas Person, you've been known to start early before...) --- I have to confess to buying some Christmas cards already in late September, at the autumn fair :) I've not started writing any yet, though!

    1. Oh dear, Monica, you have caught me out! I said to CJ this morning that you (and Meike) had memories that really put me to shame. I've already had some of my 'Christmas' cards printed too.

  11. I love Christmas, it's the one time of the year that I eagerly look forward to.
Here on the island we go all out, it's the biggest celebration for the year and the merchants LOVE it.
It's a bit strange to be missing more friends and family this year but I somehow think they'll still be around in spirit to celebrate.

    1. Virginia Christmas has never been a favourite time for me although it was, for many years, the focus of our family opportunity to leave the wild winter Hebrides and battle the seas and snow through the Highlands the nearly 500 miles south to see our parents on Merseyside.
