Art Deco Napier

I was up at 0630 last Saturday morning by which time Wendy and Martin had long gone to the gym.  It was a glorious morning so at just after 7am I decided to go and photograph the centre of Napier again before the Art Deco Weekend hordes descended for the Vintage Car Parade and the many other attractions of the day. Between that time and arriving back home at about 2.30pm I managed to take over 600 photos so I shall have no excuse for not blogging over the next few weeks although some of you may get rather bored with photos of vintage cars.

Firstly, however, I shall regale you with some photos which show why Napier is such an important Art Deco icon.

  1. I'm guessing that my idea of what constitutes trues Art Deco style has just been improved! Thanks for the tour! :) (And I'm looking forward to more.)

    1. The strange thing is, Monica, that until I came to stay in Napier all these years I wasn't a fan of Art Deco but a whole city centre of it is very pleasing.

    2. Yes, I think many buildings in matching style in a town often gives an impression that surpasses that of just one individual building. And that's not always easy to show in a photograph (because you often can't them all into the same picture!)

  2. Gorgeous photos but what an amazing colour the sky is. Forget what summer feels like as freezing here with snow (not lying though )

    1. Carol the sky is a deep solid blue at the moment and it's hot and I love it but I'm glad I don't have to do any heavy gardening!

  4. It looks very inviting, and going there so early in the morning before everybody else was out and about was a great idea!
I'd love to stroll along those streets in the sun shine; it's just gone rather cold here again, with a snowy-sleety afternoon yesterday and a cold grey morning.

    1. Meike withing a few hours the streets were thronged with people many - perhaps the majority - in period costume. I know that you would really have loved it.

  5. It is impressive but I don't enjoy Art Deco buildings. I do like some of the fabrics, the buildings look cold and soulless.
    Good shots for all that.

    1. I understand what you mean Adrian. I've never liked Charles Rennie Macintosh for the sme reason. I'm not quite sure, though, that I find any shopping street buildings have much soul and these do at least have some interest and I do rather like them. They certainly have more character than the new concrete, steel and glass constructions going up in the city.

  6. Stunning photos of the Napier town centre.
Some of the architectural details remind me of some of our buildings here on the island.
Hope you continue posting the other 584 photos soon.

  7. Lovely sunlight to illuminate the architecture... Six hundred pictures? Heavens! You are worse than me! Did you have to change batteries? I mean the camera - not you!

    1. It is different Frances and it has a lot to offer if one lives here or is simply a tourist.
