Lenticular Clouds

I'm used to seeing lenticular clouds in New Zealand but they are pretty rare around the Outer Hebrides. To see such splendid ones recently gave me a satisfying photo opportunity.

Lenticular clouds (Altocumulus lenticularis) are stationary lens-shaped clouds that form at high altitudes, normally in perpendicular alignment to the wind direction.  Due to their shape, they have been offered as an explanation for some Unidentified Flying Object sightings.

  1. They really do look a little bit other worldly. I once saw some travelling at high speed from right to left, and some dark ones of the same shape travelling at high speed from left to right. It was before the days of mobile phones with movie cameras in them, unfortunately.

    1. I would have loved to have seen that Jenny. Lenticular clouds have, for some reason I can't explain, even more fascination for me that other cloud formations.

  2. Nature is beautiful isn't it?
I don't think I've ever seen those kind of clouds over our island.
UFO wannabes or not, they're quite unique.

    1. I don't think they are very common Kay except where the conditions are just right.
