Solomon in all his glory

'Consider the lilies of the field how they grow: they toil not neither do they spin; and yet I say unto you, that Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.'  It's amazing what one recalls from one's prep school education!

I've known Sue and John for nigh on 40 years.  We came to Lewis in the same year. They left a few years ago.  I've known their children all their lives.  Sue and Jenny (Daughter Two) stayed with me for a few days last week.  Sue brought me some lilies.

I've always thought of lilies and irises as being rather formal flowers: almost in the same league as orchids.  These lilies have stayed in the kitchen and, as I have spent more time in the kitchen (the view is spectacular and the breakfast bar convenient for working) than anywhere else in the house since I came home, I've spent a lot of time enjoying their visual and olfactory presence.  I cannot recall ever having flowers with such a scent before.  It is noticeable as soon as one enters the room.

  1. Very artistic photo that last one, with that sky (I presume?) as background. Would make a nice postcard :)

    1. Absolutely correct Monica. I burned out the sky by using it as the exposure setting and then used flash for the flowers.

  2. So glad you now enjoy the pleasures of one of my favourite flowers. Unlike sweet peas, lilies are available all year round.

    1. Sue, now that the warm weather has brought all the flowers out the scent is almost overwhelming - and very beautiful. Thank you again.

  3. Gorgeous photos! Especially love the first one!
The lillies are my daughters favorite. They kind of give me a headache (ha!) but they're sure pretty.

    1. The weather this morning is very hot for here in the mid 20s at 7am! I have put the lilies outside the kitchen window and almost as soon as I did so a bee of some sort arrived. I think they will attract quite a few insects until I bring them back in again.

  6. That's a sensational close up photo Graham. They are tremendously exotic, the sort of flowers to have on the breakfast bar in Brazil! :)

    1. Thank you Jenny. I appreciate the compliment. They just have to make do with the breakfast bar on Lewis!

  7. They certainly are gorgeous and one of my favourites - but unfortunately for me they trigger the worst asthma and hayfever attacks...! life is just not fair sometimes! Enjoy them...

  8. I'm so sorry about that Yvonne. As you say - and it applies in so many ways - life is just not fair sometimes.
